Speculative Scenario Planning

This project aimed to use innovative methods to engage organisations in planning and adaptation for climate change. Shaped Outcomes developed a scenario planning method with the Curtin University Sustainability Policy (CUSP) Institute using speculative fiction to engage workshop participants’ imaginations as well as their rational thinking processes. Piloting this process with the WA Department of Sport and Recreation, Shaped Outcomes as well as members of CUSP’s Project Steering Committee, wrote specific recreation oriented narratives to help participants envisage their work under different climate change scenarios. These more detailed scenarios (created by Shaped Outcomes) postulated Western Australian conditions under different Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change (IPCC) scenarios.

Participants found the creative approach to thinking about the future useful, particularly the science fiction stories and scenario mapping.
